Dolores Haze

    I find myself thinking it is idiotic that I am devoting this post to a film that is almost as old as I am but the truth is I have only just seen it. I seem to have a hard time believing my own self when I say that my first time watching this 1997 classic was just a couple days ago but alas, it is the truth.  After hearing about it countless times I thought I had a good idea of how the story would unfold before my eyes but boy was I wrong. If anything ,I was not prepared for the dreamy , hazy film that is Lolita. It seemed to me like the entirety of it was covered in a misty fog , much like the snippets of dreams you remember a few moments after waking in the morning. Everything, from the long shots of Dolores and Humbert driving along an endless sandy road to the intimate moments these two share in a small and crowded hotel room is reminiscent of a summer's warm and cozy reverie. The hypnotic score enchants you and soon you are in this trance , one that you thoroughly enjoy. 




     At first I didn't understand what it was that turned this film into a cult classic, if I can say that, and Lo into one of the most adored and treasured female characters - though I found myself thinking she was immature and even annoying for the most part - . So adored that she is still a part of our conversations today while characters such as Elizabeth in Prozac Nation ( A film that's also been quite popular among the same audience ) have been forgotten. I gave this question some thought and I have finally come to this conclusion :

    We are all Dolores Haze. We are girls , little girls, striving , needing to be wanted, sexy , provocative despite the fact that a part of ourselves - and a rather important one at that - lingers on in childhood.

Here I am, sitting cross-legged on the white duvet enveloping my bed, sipping on some lukewarm black cherry tea as memories and thoughts cross my dazed mind, every one of them a little bit more bittersweet than the last. They cut through me like sharp knives, slicing through every vein, allowing my emotions to come pouring out of the womb. My exhausted body is asking for sleep but the demons in my head aren't tired just yet. Maybe it's the masochistic part of me that finds pleasure in such sorrow or maybe it's just human nature, but I cannot find the will or the way to pull myself out of these tumultuous waters that are now imprisoning me. In fact I lean into them. Let the waves come crashing over my head and wrap me up in this cold embrace. Let myself drown. Deeper and deeper, down to the ocean floor where I find comfort in the unknown.

It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas

Christmas is right around the corner and that means it's time to dress up and go glam! I've thought of these two outfits which I think would be wonderful for this year's holiday season. Fall Fall Fall !

Well summer drifted into fall and before we even knew it, the temperature started changing and so did everything else, including the trends. I have to say, fall fashion is my all time favorite. It's cool enough to wear more layers, yet warm enough to go out without wearing a big chunky winter coat. And this year's trends have not dissapointed me. We will be seeing lots and lots of knits, faux fur, leather and sheepskin. In short, have fun this season and don't be afraid to be different!

Closer to the edge

  30 Seconds To Mars is probably my favorite band of the moment. They have been around for a while but really caught my attention only about a month ago. I have been listening to lots of rock lately and litterally fell upon the  music video to the song Hurricane and I was instantly hooked! Never have I seen a more artistically beautiful clip. Not only do all the band members star in it, but Jared Leto, the band's lead singer, actually directed the clip, as he does for many of their clips, such as Kings And Queens and Closer To The Edge.

 The band was formed by Jared and Shannon Leto in 1998. Since then , they have released 3 albums : 30 Seconds To Mars (2002) , A Beautiful Lie (2005) and  This Is War (2009) . Although their music is hard to cathegorise, they are usually considered a progressive rock band. Their sound is completely different and I personally love it! 


Rock fan or not, I'm sure that you'll appreciate 30 Seconds To Mars. Go get their latest album out in stores now, you won't regret it !

Shorts Ahoy!

Summer is right  around the corner and that means great new trends. This year, it's all about shorts! They can be casual, paired with flat sandals and a pretty boho bag, or you can dress them up with heals and a fancy clutch. No matter what your style , shorts are sure to take over your closet this summer.  Don't be afraid to show off your legs ladies, it's only summer once a year after all.

Proenza Schouler

  Proenza Schouler are defiantly the designers of the moment , if not of the year. Just last month  (February 2011), the line's  two amazing designers, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez dressed VOGUE's cover girl Kristen Stewart and had their own interview with the worlds greatest fashion magazine.

                      

   I love the fact that every collection is different, unique. For instance, last year's collection was much more young. Colorful patterns, ranging from yellow's to blue's , short dresses and skirts and a more street-style look. This year, the collection is all about sophistication. You will see a lot  more lace , light soft colors and detailed knits.  

   And that is so proenza! Reinventing their style at every collection is what these two designers do best! I strongly believe Proenza Schouler are the voice of youth and will rock the fashion industry! Watch out !

Danish Delight

  As you may know by now , I am not a rap/hip-hop super fan. I love music of all sorts , but have a certain appreciation for the style people usually call indie or alternative. I personally just call it good stuff , but that's just me !

  One of my favorite bands at the moment is Oh land . They have this special edge to their music which I really love. I fell in love with the band when I first heard their  song sun of a gun a few months ago. I see it as a mix of electric pop and indie, but in all honesty , Oh land cannot be labeled and that's what makes them so interesting to me !

  Oh land originally from Copenhagen, Denmark, recently  toke a huge step  and moved all the way to Brooklyn, New-York. Since then , things have been getting better and better. Their US debut album was released a few months ago, on the 19th of October 2010. It includes some of their best songs such as sun of a gun , Wolf &I and rainbow.

  They previously released their first album Fauna, which was extremely successful in Denmark including some great tracks like Heavy eyes  and Still here.

   Make sure to go visit their beautiful  website and their  myspace page ! I promise you will not regret it !

SPRING FLING !

   I know it's only January and it is still relatively cold back here in Canada but I can assure you that i am in total spring mode right now ! As I flip threw my usual  ELLE , all I see is VINTAGE VINTAGE VINTAGE ! And I am soo pleased with that! I am a huge fan of vintage since for, vintage means making what was once great even better. Designers like Vuitton and and Mcqueen have been all about re-creating an already classic look in 2010. It's all about round collars, 3/4 sleeves and full skirts. 

   I am in love with neutrals and that is great since light pinks and creamy beiges will be, without a doubt , the coulours of spring. What's great about these tones is that since they are neutrals, they can almost, if not always, go with every thing else! I also always thought that these coulours looked amazing on different skin tones, from chalky pale skin to olive tones.

   Now for the scoop necks. I think scoop necks are amazing for showing off bold jewelery and keeping a balance between sophistication and sexy. It does not look overdressed or too covered-up as many people might think. You just have to know how to balange it out. When wearing a scoop neck, don't go for a long cut if you aren't quit tall ( it may look overpowering) . Show some leg since you aren't showing soo much on the upper half of your body. You can also go for bare arms which really makes the outfit look that much more fresh and young. Don't forget to accessories and there you go !

   Well that is all for now ladies ! Hopefully you have learned a thing or two and i cannot wait to see what spring 2011 has in store fore us ! I have a feeling that 2011 will be a very interesting fashion year . Don't be scared to get out of your comfort zone and get crazy!

Oh Lissie!

Probably my favorite artiste of the moment , Lissie has now won over my heart. I have been obsessed with her music since I heard in sleep for the first time this summer. I loved how edgy, raw and real her music was. And that wasn't it, she also has an amazing personal style that cannot quit be defined.

Inspired by her grandfather, who would sing along at the church, Lissie started off " making up these little songs and melodies, writing these poems and putting them to music". But Lissie never was a little Illinois church-singing girl. Actually, she was quite a little rebel. She was trouble trouble, cutting class and getting thrown out of school.

She later started singing at coffee shops, bars and clubs.Her career eventually took off when she started being regognised by fans and press such as Nylon and Marie Claire after recording a five-track EP with friend Bill Reynolds.

Now Lissie spends more time in London. where the press can't get enough of her. Some of her greatest songs to me are "Everywhere I go" "when i'm alone" and "in sleep".Gocheck her out, I promise you will love!

on the wild side leopard

Out of all the animal prints , leopard is my favorite ! One little leopard accessorie can make any casual outfit chic. I always thought that leopard print was very versatile ,since it can go from being elegent to edgy .

Lately, I have been seing leopard print EVERYWHERE! From clutches to platforms , i'm loving it all ! So lets make a statemen, It's time to be wild !

Hello blog world !

Hey blog readers !   

I'm Anna Saviolakis and this is the first entry of my blog ! I will be talking about fashion , music , litterature and everything in between. Just like an ELLE magazine , my blog will have great diversity ! i have always had an open mind and I think it's time to share it with you .

I have quit an undicided style, ranging from cute and feminine to more edgy and dark . It's always been the same with music. I have been into indie for a while now but really, i can be listening to Lykke li one day , and Drake the next!

I really hope that you enjoy my blog as much as i enjoy working on it :)
